Intern at the Waukesha County Museum
The Waukesha County Historical Society and Museum welcomes undergraduate and graduate students to learn and work alongside our staff and volunteers. Students with a particular interest in public history are encouraged to review the range of opportunities the WCHSM has available. Past interns have worked in education programming, exhibit and collections care, and in our archives and research enter.
Internship experiences are unpaid, though credit may be sought by individual colleges and universities. Candidates are asked to commit to at least 6 hours and up to 15 hours per week. Students must consult with their individual department/programs for specific credit requirements.
Our summer internships run from June 2023 to August 2023

Social Media Intern
Description of Internship
The Waukesha County Historical Society and Museum seeks an undergraduate or graduate student to strengthen the organization’s social media presence with the goal of increasing the community’s awareness of the museum and research center.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Work with the Executive Director to manage the company’s social media accounts and posts content
- Brainstorm campaign ideas
- Monitor various social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok
- Analyzes analytics to gauge the success of campaigns
- Understands the overall concept of the museum, including the brand, customer, and organizational goals
- Engages with customers or clients
- Provide suggestions to management for improving customer experience on social platforms and internal processes
- Assists in creating performance reports
Qualifications and Education
- Advanced knowledge of popular social media platforms from a brand perspective
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Highly organized
- Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines
- Proficient in Microsoft Office
- Bachelor’s degree or currently enrolled in an accredited college or university in marketing or related field of study
Education Intern
Description of Internship
WCHSM is looking for a graduate intern to work in the Education Department the of the Program & Education Coordinator. The internship will include developing hands-on programs and activities for youth and adult audiences, program research, planning and interpretation, education collection management, and marketing of education programs & activities, and most importantly: on-site experience during field trips and community-wide events.
All interns at WCHSM will have the opportunity to gain experience working alongside staff, volunteers, and fellow interns in a variety of museum contexts.
You will need to have some daytime availability for Wednesday, Thursday, and Fridays as field trips are typically scheduled on those days (you will be notified at least a month in advance). Appreciated: daytime availability for the 2nd Tuesday of every month for our communitywide Lunch and Learn. This internship is hybrid; depending upon hour requirements there is a combination of remote and on-site work.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist in giving onsite education programs, pertaining to youth and adult visits (possible off-site opportunities as well)
- Develop new education programs to offer for student and/or adult patrons
- Review and update past and current programs to align with current resources and goals
- Develop craft and other activities to enrich hands-on-history learning experiences
- Gain experience in day-to-day operations at a local history organization
