Join us at the Waukesha County Historical Society and Museum from 11 AM to 2 PM by picking up an instrument and learning the benefits that come with it! We are very fortunate to be welcoming this organization\, sponsored by the Les Paul Foundation. All ages welcome!

SUMMARY:October 2026: History after Dark
DESCRIPTION:Join us on October 1st\, 2026 for a special History After Dark presentation off-site at North Pillar Brewing Company! Our topic and host site will be sure to quench your thirst for knowledge \nBefore Oktoberfest: The Archaeology of Ancient & Medieval German Beer \nAlthough beer is made from just a few simple ingredients\, it has changed quite a bit over several thousand years. This presentation will trace the development of beer in what is now called Germany from its earliest beginnings to something closer to the drink we might enjoy at an Oktoberfest today. We will look at key archaeological evidence\, including ancient residues along with opulent drinking vessels\, and consider why ancient beer was so important to society and what it may have tasted like! Our trip will start in the Neolithic with the introduction of agriculture and brewing. It will continue through the Celtic Iron Age\, with beer-drinking chieftains\, to the Roman period\, where common Roman soldiers at the border of the Empire drank beer as often as wine. The presentation will conclude in the Middle Ages\, when the bittering hops plant so closely associated with today’s beverage finally arrived on the scene. \nJoshua Driscoll \nJoshua Driscoll is an archaeologist at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Archaeological Research Laboratory Center as well as an adjunct lecturer in Celtic Studies. His 2023 PhD dissertation at UW-Milwaukee explained the strategic use of alcohol in Iron Age Europe and included an experimental component involving the recreation of ancient-style beer. He has authored several publications about archeology\, history\, and archaeochemistry of ancient beer. \nPlease join us at North Pillar Brewing Co.\, located at 212 E North Street\, Waukesha\, WI\, for our special presentation and enjoy some great beer on tap from our friends here as we dive into the history of the drink we enjoy the taste of! \nMembers will receive $1 off the beer of your choice. DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Waukesha County Historical Society & Museum\, in partnership with Prairie Home Cemetery. \nJoin us on Friday\, October 23rd\, for a guided tour of the cemetery where you will be visited by several historical spirits. The tours will run about 1 hour as visitors walk from grave to grave to hear unique perspectives on Waukesha’s history. \nTours begin at 5 PM and run every twenty minutes. There are only 30 slots per timed session\, so book quickly! \nAccessibility: Visitors will be walking/standing on both paved roads and uneven grass. A restroom will be available before or after the tour. \nTICKET PRICING: \n\n$20 NON-MEMBERS\n$15 MEMBERS\n$10 STUDENTS\nFREE CHILDREN UNDER 5\n\nTo receive the member discount on this and other museum\, becoming a WCHSM Member today. \nPlease arrive 5-10 minutes early and bring: comfortable walking shoes\, appropriate rain/winter gear\, and/or a flashlight. Park along Prairie Avenue and walk into the cemetery; the tour will start by the chapel. \nCancellation Policy:\nTickets must be canceled 24 hours in advance. Refunds cannot be issued with less than 24-hour notice.WCHSM reserves the right to cancel the program due to severe weather.
